City Outlines Reputable Resources for Homeowners
Tuesday, March 24, 2009
WHO:   The City of St. Charles has been inundated with questions from citizens inquiring about information related to foreclosure prevention, including mortgage refinancing options.  Thanks to input from the St. Charles County Community Council, the city’s Community Development department is relaying feedback on the HOPE hotline (1-888-995-HOPE); residents can also access HOPE online at www.995HOPE.org.

WHAT:   Given there are a number of predatory scams targeting vulnerable homeowners, the city wants to ensure people have access to credible services.  By calling the HOPE hotline, homeowners can receive counseling via telephone or online.  If a resident still requires further assistance, HOPE will refer individuals to a local, credible housing counselor.

NOTE:  Even though there are no housing counseling agencies currently in St. Charles County, there are several credible agencies established throughout the greater St. Louis metro area.  Please note that mortgage counseling should always be provided free of charge.

ALSO:   Community Development has also identified two websites homeowners can review to obtain information on the new federal homeowner refinancing programs.  They are:

. http://www.financialstability.gov/makinghomeaffordable/ -- this is a governmental website with information, and a self-assessment tool to learn if someone will qualify for refinancing, etc.

. http://www.hopenow.com/ -- this website is run by HOPE, with online information, including mortgage company contacts and user friendly information outlining the Obama plan.
