Fifth Street Extension -- Mel Wetter Parkway -- Slope Repair
Tuesday, July 06, 2010

Construction to stabilize the slopes adjacent to Fifth Street Extension (Mel Wetter Parkway) began Wed., July 7.

To provide a safe work zone for the project, the southbound lane of the Fifth Street Extension (Mel Wetter Parkway) between Little Hills Expressway and Olive Street will be closed for the duration of the project.  Traffic control signs will be utilized during the project to guide traffic through the detour.

Given the southbound section of the extension will be closed, the interim traffic detour will flow as follows:

. Eastbound traffic on Little Hills Expressway to proceed to Hwy. 94 (turn right or south)
. Enter the Tecumseh Roundabout and follow the detour signage to Fourth Street
. Follow Fourth Street to Olive and make a right-hand turn

Several slopes along the Fifth Street Extension (Mel Wetter Parkway) are failing.  The purpose of this project is to repair the worst slope failures.  The proposed repairs include controlled removal of unstable slope material, rock replacement and soil grading, trench drains, placement of sod and planting of trees.

The contractor for this project is Kelpe Contracting, Inc.; the project is anticipated to begin in early July and be completed in September.
