The primary responsibility of the St. Charles Police Department Mounted Police Unit is to patrol Historic Main Street, which is host to many major festivals and events each year.

The Mounted Police Unit can also be found patrolling any area where large crowds may occur such as:

• shopping areas during the holiday season
• municipal parks
• local bars and taverns

The purpose of the Mounted Police Unit is to prevent crime before it happens as well as to present a positive image for the City and the Police Department.

The Mounted Unit is stabled on the Emmaus Home property in the City of St. Charles. The stable is situated on a five-acre tract, which is located at the rear of the facility. The Mounted Police Unit became a full-time program in 1987.
