1600s to 1700s
- 1682 - LaSalle claims Mississippi Valley for France
- 1763 - Treaty of Paris; Spanish obtain territory from France
- 1769 - Louis Blanchette settles "Les Petites Cotes" meaning "little hills"
- 1769 to 1799 Daniel Boone builds log cabin in Saint Charles County
- 1791 - Les Petites Cotes" becomes "San Carlos" to honor Charles IV of Spain with the name of his patron saint, Bishop Carlos Borromeo
- 1791 - Borromeo Church is established
1800s
- 1803 - The Louisiana Purchase
- 1804 - Land transferred from France to US; Spanish name of San Carlos is anglicized to Saint Charles
- 1804 - Lewis and Clark expedition heads west from Saint Charles
- 1805 - St. Louis is capitol of Louisiana Territory
- 1809 - St. Charles is incorporated as a city
- 1812 - Saint Charles County is organized as one of the five original Missouri counties
- 1815 - Treaty of Portage des Sioux
- 1818 - Academy of the Sacred Heart established by Philippine Duchesne
- 1820 - Daniel Boone dies and is buried in Defiance
- 1821 - Missouri becomes the 24th state
- 1821 to 1826 - Saint Charles is Missouri state capitol
- 1827 - Lindenwood College opens
- 1830s - German immigration increases due, in part, to a book observing life in the area
- 1849 - City of Saint Charles is incorporated
- 1850 - Railroad construction begins
- 1871 - First railroad bridge to span the Missouri River opens
- 1874 - First railroad car rolls off the line at the St. Charles Car Company
- 1876 - Cyclone destroys city
- 1879 and 1881 - Spans of the Railroad Bridge collapse
- 1885 - St. Joseph Hospital opens
- 1892 - Katy Railroad Depot opens
- 1894 - Three railroads completed
- 1899 - St. Charles Car Company merges to form American Car & Foundry
1900s
- 1901 - County Court House is started
- 1904 - First highway bridge to Saint Charles opens in time for the Worlds Fair in St. Louis; Streetcar service becomes available
- 1916 - Tornado destroys Borromeo Church
- 1921 to 1924 - Construction on modern highway system begins
- 1931 - Daniel Boone Bridge opens, spans Missouri River
- 1932 - Streetcar service ends
- 1935 - Spans of railroad bridge collapse
- 1945 - American Car & Foundry switches production to build light tanks for the war effort
- 1958 - Katy Depot closes
- 1959 - American Car & Foundry ceases production
- 1969 - First State Capitol declared a State Historic Site
- 1976 - Current City Hall is constructed - gold glass "reflects our past and shines on our future"
- 1979 - Katy Depot is relocated to Frontier Park
- 1992 - Discovery Bridge opens
- 1993 - Great Flood
- 1994 - Clark Bridge links Saint Charles & Illinois
- 1997 - Highway 115 Bridge is demolished
2000s
- 2000 - Census marks population at 283,000
- 2004 - Part of the railroad foundry is renovated as a The Foundry Art Centre
- 2009 - St. Charles celebrates 200 years as an incorporated city
