Kingshighway Traffic Calming

Project Description

Traffic calming incorporates engineering design and management strategies that balance vehicular traffic on streets with other uses. Engineers explore and implement traffic calming techniques that lessen the impact of motor vehicle traffic by slowing it down, or literally "calming" it. The goals of traffic calming projects may include:

  • Enhancing quality of life
  • Creating safe and attractive streets
  • Promoting pedestrian, cycle and transit use
  • Helping to reduce the negative effects of motor vehicles on the environment

Project Location

Kingshighway - Clark St to Randolph St

Current Project Activities

  • Resident Meeting #1: May 9th, 2019 5:00P at St. Charles High School Auditorium
  • Preliminary information shows the accident and speed violation rates had the highest score on the traffic calming eligibility form. The traffic calming eligibility form scored a total of 97 points which does meet eligibility. The counters did showed a higher amount of drivers exceeding the speed limit going northbound than southbound. The reason could be the St. Charles High School speed zone of 15mph. Even so, the average was 30mph during school session. Also there is some correlation between volume and speed. Higher volume equals lower speed mostly probably due to congestion but the average speeds during these times were higher than 25mph.
  • Kingshighway Survey Link : Survey will close on June 9, 2019, results will be posted mid June 2019
